What Hair Styles Make You Look Younger

Hair is viewed as a symbol of strength and holiness, and uncut hair symbolizes denial of vanity and acceptance of a simple life. Today, hair is as important to us as ever, and while many people are affected by hair loss at some point in their lives, there are more hair loss treatments available than ever before.

Here are some hair mistakes that make you age faster:

Why Do Women Assume They Have To Have Short Hair?

Blame it on countless years of family reunions and too-hard squeezes from our permed grandmothers and great-grandmothers, but our society seems to have this ingrained thinking that older age means shorter strands. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. Of course, if your hair is thinning or you happen to just love shorter hair, then decide on a shorter style. However, as far as necessity or “appropriateness,” there are absolutely no hard and fast rules that say you must have your hair in a certain way.

Why You Shouldn’t Highlight Hair to Cover Grays

“One of the biggest mistakes I see women make is using highlights as their sole means for covering gray hair,” explains celebrity colorist George Papa Nikolas. He says this usually results in dry, overly processed strands. “Unless you are a natural blonde, lots of highlights atop gray hair can look harsh against the skin, especially for olive and darker complexions,” he says.
Instead, he suggests prioritizing healthy, shiny hair by requesting depth at the roots (for “an illusion of youth”) via a single process color for gray coverage and subtle highlights added only three to four times a year for some subtle dimension.

Making an Extreme Color Change

All too often, new clients think that if they are blonde and want to mix it up, they need to go all dark brown or even blue-black. This extreme shift darker can look fabulous with the right balance of skin tone, 24/7 glam team, clothing color/accessories, but for the day-to-day, this extreme shift in color tends to leave women looking harsh and prematurely aged.

Forgetting Hydration-Packed Products

Regardless of your hair’s texture, color, or length, all five experts agreed that dry, damaged, overly processed hair is one of the first things that will age you as far as your strands are concerned. Therefore, consider looking for hair care products formulated to pack an extra punch of hydration while leaning into shine and moisture-invigorating picks, like weightless oils, that can be added to damp or dry hair for a youthful sheen and bounce. To make sure your oil doesn’t stain the tint of your tresses, pick one that has high-quality ingredients and is crystal clear in color.

5. Too much volume

While a little volume can be beautiful, going overboard will only age you. Because our hair tends to thin as we age, many of us worry about it looking too flat. Talk to your stylist about a great volumizing shampoo or flattering layers.

6. Don't fall flat.

While a little volume can be beautiful, going overboard will only age you. Because our hair tends to thin as we age, many of us worry about it looking too flat. Talk to your stylist about a great volumizing shampoo or flattering layers. Many women and men with long hair often age themselves unnecessarily by allowing their hair to fall too flat on their face, either by combing it down too much or not using mousse or similar when blow-drying.” Even explains that flat hair only accentuates prominent facial features. So, if you are not crazy about your nose or chin, a flat does call more attention to them. Make sure you are not weighing your hair down with too much product and try not to brush it too much.

7.The wrong shampoo

Your shampoo affects your hairstyle, and it may be making you look older. Shampoos for “normal hair types” are not the best option as you age. “You have to have the right tools and products for gorgeous hair,” says Sam Villa Show Ambassador, Marissa Villa. “Grey and aging hair have unique characteristics that require a mask once a week, color-protecting shampoo, thermal protectant, and more effort in the fight against frizz.”

8. Slicked back styles

As we age, it’s a chance to embrace our true selves and ditch all that self-consciousness that ruled our teens and 20s. Rock your true hair texture and look without trying to pull it back into tight knots. This only makes you look older.

9. Cool it on the accessories.

Oftentimes when we want to have a more youthful appearance, we fall back on the styles that we wore when we were younger. It worked back then, right? However, pulling out your old sparkly butterfly clips is a first-class ticket to looking older than you are. Dina Scherer, NYC Image & Wardrobe Stylist & Personal Shopper and owner of Modnitsa Styling recommends the less-is-more approach when it comes to hair accessories. “Hairstyles that include many dated accessories, like scrunchies, hair clips that don’t match your hair color and are obvious, certain types of claw clips,” warns Scherer. “They all attract too much attention to themselves — distracting from your do, and can make you look juvenile and read as fashion no-nos.”

If you tend to wear your hair longer and need to pull it back from time to time, stick with a relaxed, soft ponytail. “If you prefer long hair, wearing it tied low, loose, and to the side is more elegant and youthful than a tight ponytail in the middle back or high up on your head,” says celebrity hairstylist Vernon Francois. “I’d also suggest choosing accessories that match or are a similar tone to the color of your hair, instead of something very contrasting… Resist anything cartoony or gimmicky.”

“While hair that’s loosely pulled back can be very flattering, tightly pulled buns and ponytails tend to put any wrinkles or imperfections front and center,” says Scott Yance. “As we age, it’s best to work with your hairstylist to find a haircut and style that frames your face and plays up your best features.”
So, make no more of these disastrous mistakes and become the more youthful you!
